Start with the cost, then look at the reason
Every merchant should understand what a new programme costs before joining it. Diamond acceptance is no different. The useful question is not simply whether there is a cost, but whether the customer activity created by acceptance can make that cost worthwhile.
The Master Plan gives a simple planning example: roughly $17 per shop per month, spread across 30 shops in an estate of 500 active members. Treat this as the sized example in the programme plan, not as a universal promise for every merchant.
The footfall argument matters more than the headline
Suppose a member comes to your shop because they have Diamonds to redeem. The value of that visit is not necessarily limited to the redemption itself.
The Master Plan gives the clearest example: someone redeeming $1 and buying $3 of groceries can represent a net gain for the merchant. The point is that Diamond acceptance can create an additional reason for a customer to enter the shop.
Think about the monthly cost in context
A monthly programme cost should be compared with the customer activity it helps generate. If acceptance brings people who would otherwise not visit, the cost has a different meaning than it would if nobody uses the programme.
That is why merchants should watch actual redemption activity and the purchases that happen around those visits rather than judging the programme from the monthly figure alone.
Do not assume every shop gets the same result
Customer behaviour varies by location, product mix, competition and the number of active members nearby. A shop in a dense estate may experience a different result from a shop serving a much wider but less concentrated area.
The right benchmark is therefore your own business activity: how many customers come through the programme, what they redeem, and whether those visits lead to useful additional business.
A simple way to think about it
Use three questions:
- What does acceptance cost me each month?
- How many customers are actually using Diamonds at my shop?
- What additional business happens around those redemption visits?
Those questions turn a programme fee into a business decision instead of an abstract number.
Diamond acceptance is worth evaluating as a customer-acquisition tool. Know the cost, watch the activity, and judge the programme by the business it helps bring through your door.
